Amorphophallus kiusianus

Amorphophallus kiusianus
150cm, Kyushu Titan aroid is a medium sized, robust species from woodlands of S Japan (Kyushu island). Makes an elegant flower stem topped by a yellowish green spathe mottled light brown and a black spadix, followed by a fruit stalk with intensive pink berries, turning to metallic dark blue on ripening. Easy in any humus rich, well drained soil in partial shade in a fresh spot. Larger specimens may be hardy in the open garden in a protected spot in humus rich soil with a good, insulating leaf cover in winter. Sow seeds some 3cm deep in any humus rich, well drained soil, keep pots always warm and slightly moist in a partially shaded spot until first dormancy of seedlings. Then keep soil slightly drier (but not totally dry) and store pots in a cool, yet frostfree place in winter. Keep warmer and slightly moist as soon as new growth starts, which will usually be with rising temperatures in spring. USDA Climate Zone 8. VI-VII.
