Butia capitata (Jelly Palm)

Butia capitata (Jelly Palm)
3 (7)m, Jelly Palm from Brazil and Uruguay. This Butia species belongs to the most frost resistant feathered palms! Decorative glaucous leaves, strongly recurved. Tolerant for humid areas. Large dark-orange fruits from this palm are used to make jelly, thus its name. Requires good winter protection, better for a cold greenhouse in colder areas (Central Europe). If some seeds do not germinate in the first year of sowing, keep pots cooler (yet frostfree) and the soil semi-moist during winter. In following spring place them warmer and sunny, which induces germination in most seeds. USDA Climate Zone 8.
