Dioscorea batatas (Chinese Yam)
4 (10)m, Chinese Yam is a vigorous herbaceous climber for any fertile, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. The vertically growing tuber may gain up to 50cm in length and can be used either cooked, baked or fried. May be propagated by cutting off the top to some 15cm in length, and which is hence replanted. The species is winter hardy in Central Europe, if tubers are planted rather deep in any rich, very well drained soil with a light winter protection (e.g. mulch layer). USDA Climate Zone 7/8. VII-IX.
Note: all green parts (leaves, stem, flowers, fruits and seeds) as well as the raw tuber are poisonous if ingested !
Bulbils are not available for a delivery to the U.S.
